Dog Training FAQ
There are
many different dog training
methods out there. Which one is the right one?
There's
no such thing as one single training method that works for every dog.
The most effective training techniques for your dog will depend on his
unique temperament and drive.
Which dog training
method do you use?
Because
every dog is different, I don't limit myself to one particular method;
however, I train all my dogs using highly motivational and positive
techniques and I refrain from using harsh physical and verbal
corrections.
How soon should I
begin dog training?
The best time to start is now! Dogs of all ages have the capacity to
learn new behaviors.
Where will the dog
training take place?
In
and around your home and neighborhood, starting in a quiet environment
and gradually working amid people, outside noises, and other
distractions.
How long will it
take to train my dog?
While
most dogs can learn the basic commands pretty quickly, your consistency
and continual participation in the training process will play a
significant role, especially in the long term.
Do you teach group
classes?
Yes, but
only for dogs that have already completed individual Training Lessons
or the Intensive Training Course. An untrained dog needs
special
one-on-one attention
during the initial training process, which simply isn't possible in a
group
setting.
Do you use choke
collars?
I never use
choke collars because they are inhumane and an unnatural method of
correction to the dog. If a training collar is necessary at all, I
prefer to use collars designed to induce natural stimuli to distract
the dog from undesired behavior - alternatively, a collar worn around
the muzzle or even a harness would be a suitable tool.
My dog was trained
using traditional
methods. He
seems unmotivated and I don't like the harsh corrections I was taught
to give him. Is there a better way?
Absolutely! The
foundation of my training method is finding what motivates the dog to
want to learn -- whether it's food, a toy, or lots of love and
attention!
Once my dog has
been trained, will he
ever forget what he learned?
As
long as you practice consistency, and make time every day to work with
your dog, he will remain a well-mannered, enjoyable member of the
family for all of his days!
